Grootvader communiceert via tekeningen op Instagram met zijn kleinkinderen

De 75-jarige Chan Jae Lee woont met zijn vrouw in Brazilië. Zijn kleinkinderen wonen in New York en Korea, niet naast de deur dus. Dit maakt het lastig om een persoonlijke band met hen op te bouwen. Gelukkig biedt Instagram een uitkomst. Chan houdt ervan om tekeningen te maken voor zijn kleinkinderen. Deze post hij op zijn Instagramaccount en zijn vrouw verzint er verhaaltjes bij. Zo staat hij toch in regelmatig contact met zijn kleinkinderen.

Persoonlijke tekeningen

Grootvader Chan wil dat zijn kleinkinderen hem leren kennen en weten wie hij was als hij er straks niet meer is. Om die reden maakt hij zijn tekeningen heel persoonlijk. Twee van zijn kleinkinderen hebben de eerste paar jaar van hun leven in Brazilië gewoond,voordat ze naar Korea verhuisden. Om herinneringen op te halen maakt Chan dan bijvoorbeeld een tekening over het speelgoed wat zij hebben achtergelaten.

Andere thema's die voorkomen in de tekeningen zijn dieren en planten (want daar houdt zijn vrouw heel erg van) en herinneringen aan Korea: hij tekent dan vooral over Koreaanse tradities en plaatsen. Ook dagelijkse gebeurtenissen komen voorbij, zoals een diner met vrienden of president Obama die zijn laatste speech geeft.

Een persoonlijke tekening kopen

De tekeningen van Chan zijn te koop via deze website. De opbrengst gebruikt hij om zijn kleinkinderen te kunnen bezoeken. Hoe het Instagramaccount tot stand kwam wordt uitgelegd door de zoon van Chan in dit filmpje:

As recently as in the 70's, life was hard in Korea. I stumbled across photos of that time and I saw a very familiar image: A young garbage collector in 1973, in the center of Seoul fetching paper, boxes, newspaper, cans... Nowadays the big wicker basket is gone, but still today, in the corners of Seoul, you can find old people collecting paper, boxes, newspaper, cans to sell them. Arthur and Allan, this is from when you were in the 4th and 5th grades in the Jardim São Paulo school, when grandpa used to drive you to school. You can see what's the relationship between two brothers in this image of you walking side by side from behind. I feel the joy just looking at it. Arthur, although you're only one and a half year older than Allan, you always looked after your younger brother, And Allan, you must have felt so reassured about having a big brother! Besides always carrying Allan's backpack, Arthur was constantly taking care of his brother: "Allan needs to pee. He's thirty." Two years ago, a bone-thin cat was found in the backyard of the Buddhist temple. The monk took the almost dying cat to the hospital. He slowly recovered and he must have told his friends he was lonely because out of nowhere many cats started to visit him. Now there are five of them. He usually disappears until it's the time eat. Then he slowly appears to eat the food the monk distributes to the cats. After the meal, he stretches and lays down. It's the happy moment when all worries are gone. #drawing #watercolor #cat #buddhisttemple #monk #hospital #friends #food Um gato que era só osso foi achado no quintal do templo budista que frequentamos. Isso foi uns 2 anos atrás. E o monge do templo o levou a um veterinário. O gato que então sobreviveu e não mais tinha preocupações com o que comer, talvez por se sentir só, deve ter contado a outros gatos o ocorrido. Não sabemos de onde vêm mas agora já são cinco. Ficam por aí e quando dá a hora de comer vão aparecendo de mansinho e começam a comer os vários pratinhos que o monge deixa preparado. Let's not forget Tilikum, the orca who helped change people's mind. He was captured and taken away from his family when he was 3. He was trained to entertain people for over 30 years in a small confinement. He had been sick for nearly one year and sadly he died on January 6th. In the past, he was involved in a horrific killing of his trainer and received the attention from the world, but his in depth story was told in a documentary "Black Fish." The Sea World in Florida has announced they will never do another show involving orcas.
